What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: a medicine that acts like GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after you eat. It slows how quickly your stomach empties and acts on appetite signals in the brain, so many people feel full sooner and for longer. FDA-approved semaglutide is used, along with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.

In a large clinical trial of FDA-approved once-weekly semaglutide, adults who took it alongside lifestyle changes lost more weight on average than adults who took a placebo. That trial studied an FDA-approved product, not a compounded one. Results vary from person to person.

Compounded semaglutide through Living+

Living+ offers compounded semaglutide as a once-weekly injection. About compounded medication. Some medications prescribed through Living+ are compounded. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold. They are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient, on a prescription. They are not generic versions of any brand-name medicine. A compounded preparation is prescribed only when your provider decides an FDA-approved product is not clinically suitable for you, and your provider records the reason in your chart.

Your provider decides whether semaglutide is right for you, and at what dose. Doses usually start low and increase slowly, which helps your body adjust and can make stomach side effects easier to manage. Follow the dosing and storage instructions on your pharmacy label exactly, and ask your care team if anything is unclear. If your shipment ever arrives warm, read what to do when your vial arrives warm.

Who semaglutide may be right for

FDA-approved semaglutide for weight management is labeled for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. Your provider looks at criteria like these and your full health history.

Side effects and safety

The most common side effects of GLP-1 medicines are stomach-related: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain. They are usually worst when you start or when the dose goes up. Tell your provider about any side effect, and get medical help right away for severe stomach pain that does not go away, signs of an allergic reaction, or very little urine.

Important: FDA-approved semaglutide and tirzepatide carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodent studies. Do not use these medicines if you or anyone in your family has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Other serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar (especially with insulin or a sulfonylurea), kidney problems from dehydration, and allergic reactions. These medicines are not for use during pregnancy. See our Important Safety Information.
